Paladins top UNC-Asheville on the road, improve to 8-4-3 on the season

The Furman Paladins Men’s Soccer squad hit the road on Tuesday evening, traveling to Asheville, NC to face the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs in Southern Conference action.

The Paladins (8-4-3, 2-1-1) doubled up the Bulldogs (7-5-2, 2-2-1) 4-2 in the game despite trailing UNC-Asheville early in the contest.

The Bulldogs leaped in front out of the gate, punching the ball into the back of the net in the 11th minute of the game. UNC-A midfielder Stewart Patnaud was credited with the goal off a combined assist from fellow Bulldog midfielder Sam Pitts-Eckersall and defenseman Myles Edmondson.

Right before the half in the 43rd minute, Furman evened the contest at 1 apiece with a goal from Paladin defenseman Charlie Boone. Boone was able to convert the rebound of a deflected shot into a Furman point at the 42:30 mark.

While the Bulldogs may have gotten the first laugh, he who laughs last laughs best. The Paladins stormed out of the second half locker and controlled the remainder of the contest. Furman took the lead for good with a score from midfielder Lloyd Wamu Snell at the 59:59 mark. With the floodgates opened, Furman added another goal less than 10 minutes later, as Paladin forward Christian Kraus hammered the ball into the back of the net at the 67:50 mark to give the Paladins a 3-1 lead.

Minutes later, Furman midfielder Tommy Redhead gave the Paladins their 4th goal of the evening at the 75:55 mark. UNC-Asheville midfielder Aidan Whitlock added a garbage time goal in the 88th minute, but the result of the contest was no longer in question. In total, the Paladins scored 4 unanswered goals including three goals in a single 30 minute stretch of the second half to ice away the contest.

The Paladins will remain on the road for their next contest, traveling to face Wofford on Saturday evening to close out their regular season schedule.
