Furman Women's Basketball

Furman Women’s Basketball comes into one of its final games of the season versus its SoCon rival the Mercer Bears in hopes of getting a better spot in the Southern Conference seeding. Both teams come out strong on defense but Furman is able to take the first lead by the first media timeout 10-4 behind Forward Kate Johnson and Jada Session with 4 points apiece.

We come to the end of the first quarter of play and Mercer has slowly climbed back into this game against the Paladins with 37 seconds left in the half 16-12. Jada session leads all scorers with 6 points with Mcgowens and Johnson both with 4 points in the game. Its halftime here at Hayes Gym and the Paladins lead heading into the second quarter 18-12. The Paladins have 14 points in the paint as they have owned so far, while also leading in rebounds against Mercer 15-9.

The Second quarter the Bears fight back and with 3 minutes left its a 30-26 game as Furman has held on to its lead. The Bears are now led by Harris 8 points and Diarra 7 points, with Furman now led by Kate Johnson 10 points and Jada Session 6 points. We go into halftime with Furman up 36-32 as Tate Walters almost got the buzzer beater. Kate Johnson leads Paladins players with 10 points 5 rebounds and 2-2 at the line. Jada Session and Clair Coyle follow her with 6 points apiece for the Paladins.

The Bears once again fight back and it’s a 41-38 game with 7 minutes in the 3rd quarter, both teams with 2 fouls in the second half of play. Kate Johnson 12 points and Tate Walters 11 points the seniors of the team are giving a huge effort to keep this game in Paladin win column as they are pushing teammates when Mercer gets a basket to answer with a score. The Paladins have had great passing in this game also.

We come to the end of the third quarter with Furman leading the game 58-54 and the leaders in the game for Furman are Tate Walters 13 points & 5 rebounds 5 assist, Kate Johnson 12 points & 5 rebounds. Paladin’s stats are shooting 41% from FG range, 20% from 3-point range, 7 points off turnovers so far in the game as we head to the final 10 minutes of the game.

We have 6 minutes left in the game and Mercer has battled back and has the lead 63-56 as Furman has had some tough shots miss and some miss opportunities to get back in the lead. All five starters for Furman back in the game hoping to get back in this game before it’s too late. One minute to go and its 70-68 Mercer in the lead and we have a timeout as Furman has tied it up with 48 seconds left in the game. Ryan and Johnson have 16 points apiece to lead Furman in these final seconds of the game. Now its 35 seconds left in the game as Furman calls a timeout after a jump ball and now has possession of the ball with shot clock at 30 seconds. Furman scores with 9.5 seconds left to retake the lead 72-70 and the fans have come alive. Mercer now has a quick chance to tie or win, and here we go.
