Lady Paladins Face off with the Lady Valkyries at Timmons Arena
The Furman Women’s Basketball (9-6) team will host the Lady Converse Valkyries (5-7) today at Timmons Arena and its going to be a great game based on the match ups on the floor. Furman is looking to continue its winning streak and get ready for conference play which starts this week with two games. Furman has been off since last Sunday so time to heal and rest to be ready for this busy week of games.
So, with that said, it’s time to play and the teams are now set on the floor, players announced, let’s get the game started. Converse starts out with the lead but Furman battles back and its now 8-6 Paladins get the lead with 7 minutes left in the first quarter. Tate Walters is already getting hot and made several shots as Furman extends its lead 16-11 with 5 minutes left in the first. Timeout by Converse at the 1:36 mark and the score is 25-18.
The end of the first quarter and Furman is up 28-21 and the stats so far are our scoring leaders are Tate Walters and Sydney James with 6 points, and Kate Johnson and Sydney Ryan with 4 a piece. Paladins have 10 points in the paint, 11 second chance points, 9 points off the bench and 2 points off fast breaks, and 9 off turnovers.
Paladins are staying focused, they have had a few bad passes, but much better ball movement today, as the score is now 32-23 with 4:45 left in the half. Furman has been able to keep the lead and shut down Converse so far. Converse to its credit has been playing well enough to keep Furman close enough to get back in the game.
The game is now 41-23 with less than 2 minutes to play and the Paladins are wanting to close out the half strong. Converse is trying its best to get a rhythm, but keeps making some passing mistakes, still they are playing hard for Coach Davidson. We end the first half of play with Furman in the lead 41-26 over the Lady Valkyries.
The first half stats are Paladins top scorers are Kaye Johnson with 10 points and 11 rebounds so a double-double already for her in the first half. Tate Walters has had her best half so far this season with 9 points with 3 assists in the game. Furman has 18 points in the paint, 17 second chance points, 11 points off the bench, 10 points off turnovers, and 2 points off fast break. Furman is shooting 38.9% from FG, 41.7% from 3-point range, and 88.9% from the line in the first half.
The first media timeout is upon us and Furman has a 47-29 lead with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. The Paladins have been able to keep Converse at bay while getting a few extra shots, 22 points in the paint so far, 17 second chance points has helped also, the most so far this season. Kate Johnson leads with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the game. The Paladins are at a Media timeout and Tate Walters is on fire from 3-point line, she now has led Furman to a 61-32 lead with 4:19 left in the 3rd period, while getting 17 points, and 4 assist. Furman is 56% from 3-point range, 90% from the free throw line, while improving the FG% to 46.7%. We end the 3rd period with Furman with a huge lead 74-34 as we head to the 4th period. Tate Walters leads with 19 points & 8 assist, Kate Johnson is next with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Niveya Henley has 13 points with 3 rebounds.
Kate Johnson starts controlling the paint as usual and Furman is getting the rebounds and is leading Furman to an 80-36 lead with 6 minutes left in the game. Furman is shooting 49% from the field, 58% from 3-point range and 92% from the line today as we have a host of new players in the game to get more time in. Furman is dominating the game in every phase so far; Converse is looking for any bright spot to gain some traction on the floor. Timeout on the floor, its 85-36 Paladins in the lead over Converse with 4:30 left in the game.
We are 4 minutes left in the game and Furman has a 51-point lead. New players are in as the first team starters all but done for the game. Paladins looking to run out the clock, while Converse is going fast to get a basket, but turnovers are hurting them. Furman leads 92-38 with Grier at the line, The game is over, and Furman walks away with a 93-40 win over Converse today!
