After nearly two days on life support in Greenville Memorial Hospital, Furman football player Bryce Stanfield passed away on Friday. He was 21 years old.

Stanfield, a junior out of Acworth, Georgia, collapsed during a workout on Wednesday morning and was taken to the hospital where he remained in critical condition for two days before passing away Friday.

“We are heartbroken beyond measure with Bryce’s sudden passing and ask that everyone, first and foremost, lift up his parents, Fred and Teri Stanfield and their family, in prayer on this day and in the days ahead,” said Furman head football coach Clay Hendrix in a statement released to the media.

The cause of Stanfield’s death has yet to be released at this time.

Before Stanfield’s passing on Friday, the entirety of the Paladin football team along with the president of Furman university, Elizabeth Davis, gathered in Bryce’s hospital room. Davis conferred a Bachelor of Science degree (magna cum laude) onto Stanfield, making him a Furman graduate.

“That was something that was very important to him as a student,” Furman AD Jason Donnelly said. “One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen was the entire team there with him in the room spending time with him, praying, crying, being together as a Furman football team which really meant the world to him.”

As the shock of losing their teammate and friend sets in, Stanfield’s teammates and coaches have taken to social media to mourn the loss of their brother in arms.

“Our Furman Family is heartbroken by Bryce’s passing, and we share our deepest condolences with family, friends, and teammates,” Donnelly said. “Bryce was a beautiful soul, a loving son, loyal friend, tremendous teammate and great student. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers from our entire community. Bryce will be dearly missed but will be remembered in our hearts forever.”
