Furman Women’s Soccer makes it to semifinals of SoCon tourney before falling to #1 seeded Western Carolina
The Furman Paladin’s Women’s soccer team traveled to Cullowhee, N.C. to participate in the annual Southern Conference postseason tournament this past weekend.
The Paladins (7-5-7, 3-1-5) defeated UNC-Greensboro in a quarterfinal penalty shootout after playing to a 2-2 tie in regulation on Friday afternoon before falling just short against the #1 seed and tournament host Western Carolina in the semifinals.
Goalkeeper Addison Corn came up huge for the Paladins with two saves in the penalty shootout quarterfinal win over UNC-Greensboro. Furman’s Maddie Massie and Ashlyn Goila gave the Paladins their two goals in regulation, scoring at the 23:39 and 40:04 marks respectively. UNC-Greensboro battled back with two second half goals to tie the game, but the Paladins stood strong defensively and converted their offensive opportunities to come away victorious 3-1 in the contest deciding penalty kick shootout.
The Paladins played a fantastic defensive game against the 12-4-3 Western Carolina Catamounts in the semifinals, but it wasn’t quite enough to knock off the tournament’s #1 seed, as WCU headed in the game winning goal in the 78th minute, eventually escaping the Paladins by a 1-0 margin to advance to the championship contest.
