Furman Women’s Soccer falls to UNC Asheville, 2-1

Asheville, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Bulldogs defeated the Furman Paladins 2-1 in non-conference NCAA Division 1 Women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (4-1-0) got the scoring started with a goal from MID Barrett Eidson at the 29:40 mark. UNCA’s MID Kayia Boyd and FWD Taylor Gardner slipped the ball through the Furman defense as Eidson took the assist and put the ball into the left corner of the goal to give UNCA the lead.

Early in the second half, UNCA added to their lead with a goal from DEF Shae Hassig off a corner kick. Hassig put the ball into the net with a header at the 48:09 mark to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.

Not to be outdone, the Paladins cut the UNCA lead in half in the 65th minute, as FWD Valentina Mosquera converted off an assist from MID Ashlyn Goila, getting the ball past UNCA keeper Grace Murray at the 64:45 mark.

A comeback was not in the cards for the Furman Women however, as UNCA shut the Paladins out for the remainder of the contest to come away victors by a 2-1 margin. Furman outshot UNCA 6-0 over the final 40 minutes of the contest but Murray stayed strong back in goal for the Bulldogs, finishing the contest with six saves and one goal allowed in the Asheville win

Mosquera ended the contest with three of Furman’s five shots on goal, as well as the only Paladin goal. Furman goalkeeper Addison Corn finished with 3 saves while allowing two goals in the losing effort.

The Paladins (3-2-1) remain on the road for their next contest, as they travel to Columbia to face nationally ranked South Carolina on September 10th before returning home to host South Carolina State on September 14th.
