Furman Women’s Basketball Faces Mercer at Timmons Arena
Furman Women’s basketball comes into tonight’s game (11-9, 1-3 SoCon) versus the Mercer Bears (8-13,2-3 SoCon) at Timmons for a chance to not only improve their record but get back on the winning train after a bad week of games and a two lose streak.
Furman starts off with the lead but Mercer fires back and with 4:11 left in the quarter and our first media timeout Mercer is ahead 9-6. Furman with 4 points off second chance so far, Henley leads the way with 3 points, Session with two as we get back to the action.
Furman is able to battle back from being down 6 points to finish the period up 15-11 heading into the 2nd period. Furman had 5 points off the bench, 4 points in the paint, and 2 points off turnovers. Furman shooting 75% from FT line, 40% from 3-point range, and 29% from the floor.
Media Timeout and Furman is leading 22-15 and starting to really put the pressure on the Bears of Mercer. Furman has 10 points off the bench, 9 second chance points, 6 points in the paint, and 2 points off turnovers with 6:36 left in the half. Furman with 50 seconds left has a huge momentum swing and is leading 30-21, and we go into halftime with the score with that same score. Mercer comes out of halftime with a purpose and cuts the lead to 30-26 with 6:38 left in the 3rd period. Media timeout and the score is 37-30 Furman starting to take back its big lead it had at halftime. Furman stats as of now are 60% from the line, 40% from 3 point range and 37% from the field.
We are at the end of the 3rd and the Paladins are up 10 points with a 45-35 lead on the Mercer Bears, and ready to fight its way out of the bottom of the league standings. Furman with 15 points off the bench, 18 points in the paint, and 7 points off turnovers so far.
Media timeout with 4:47 left in the game and Furman still leads 47-44 with the Mercer Bears trying to come back in the games final minutes. Furman stat wise at this point is shooting 36% from the field, 45% from 3-point range, and 66% from the line.
We are down the final 45 seconds of the game; Furman holds a 56-51 lead as Mercer is now left to foul as quickly as possible to get the Paladins at the line. it is a 58-53 game with 22 seconds left and Furman doing its best to keep the Bears from coming back.
The game is over and Furman wins 58-56 after a Bears crazy comeback.
