Furman Welcomes Auburn to BSWA
The Furman Paladins Men’s Basketball team of the Southern Conference welcomes in the Auburn Tigers of the Southeastern Conference in a charity basketball game to start the 2024-25 season. Proceeds of this game benefit the Friends of Cleveland Park and the City of Greenville Park restoration projects.
Furman will be welcoming home a familiar face in new Auburn Guard JP Pegues who helped Furman to several huge wins over his career for the Paladins.
Furman starts off strong and takes a 4-0 lead before Auburn strikes back and goes on a 5-0 run to make it 5-4 with 14:22 left in the period. We take a media timeout, and Fouls are Furman with 3 and Auburn with 1. The game has gone crazy as starting forward and senior Garrett Hien has been injured and taken to the locker room, several players on both teams are in foul trouble at the 8-minute mark in the first period. Media timeout and we have a shout now with Furman behind 20-22 with just over 7 minutes left in the game.
Furman is trying to keep its players out of foul trouble, but the referees are out for the whistles today in a charity game of all things. Furman takes the lead with a 3 pointer by newcomer Charles Johnston and its 27-26 with 2 minutes left in the game. We have a change in the score as Auburn has come back strong and its 32-27 Auburn.
We are at halftime and the Paladins are behind 36-29 to the SEC Auburn Tigers with the Paladins having 10 fouls as does Auburn shouting 30.8% from 3-point range, and 34% from FG with 19 rebounds. The Paladins have given a great effort against the visiting Tigers and will look to build on its new look team in the second half. Furman is fighting back in the game and its 49-41 with 14 minutes left in the game.
Furman at the 10-minute mark is down 57-48 and are giving a great effort not having a point guard in the game as PJ Smith is not available to play. Furman has 5 fouls this half to the 8 fouls by Auburn so far, for a charity game it has been really physical for both teams. Garrett Hien has returned and is also playing for the Paladins.
