The Furman Paladins Softball team (13-14) starts it SoCon league play today at Pepsi Stadium versus the Western Carolina Catamounts (7-12). Coach Stacey Johnson-Whitfield has her Lady Paladins coming into today’s game off a 2-game winning streak after defeating Presbyterian mid-week. Furman puts Sierra Tufts on the mound (3.30 era) vs Western’s Makenzie Martin (4.96 era).

The game starts off slow with both teams getting out of the first without a score, but Furman is the first on the board with a score with 1 out in the bottom of the second and makes it 1-0 heading into the third inning. Furman opens up the flood gates in the third scoring 6 runs and making the game 7-0 after several (4) errors by Western Carolina as we head to the 4th inning of play.

Western Carolina in the top of the fourth gets a grand slam and makes the score 7-4 and quickly gets back in the game with 0 outs in the inning. The Catamounts get another, and we head to the bottom of the 5th score 7-5 with Furman up to bat.

Furman is able to get 2 more insurance runs as Western Carolina tries to comeback yet loses 9-8 after the top of the 7th. Winning pitcher for Furman with her first career win is #10 Angelina Ricciardi.
