Furman Men’s Soccer’s Senior Night spoiled at the hands of ETSU, 2-0

The Furman Paladins Men’s soccer squad celebrated Senior Night in their final home game of 2023 in Stone Stadium against Eastern Tennessee State on Saturday Evening.

Unfortunately for the Paladins (7-4-3, 2-1-1), the Buccaneers (8-5-2, 3-0-1) had no intentions of gifting Furman a Senior Night victory, as ETSU won 2-0 behind two second half goals, including a late penalty kick to put the game out of reach.

The only scoring of the evening came in the 2nd half, as both teams battled to a scoreless draw at halftime. In the 64th minute ETSU broke the scoreless tie with a goal from Keiran Richards off an assist from Tarik Pannholzer and Louie Salkeld at the 63:39 mark.

The score would hold steady all the way to the 89th minute, when Pannholzer punched a penalty kick into the back of the net at the 88:26 mark to effectively ice the contest in the Buccaneers favor.

Each goalkeeper played superbly in the defensive battle. Furman keeper Aaron Salinas finished with two saves and two goals allowed while ETSU goalie Cole Hunter finished with seven saves and zero goals allowed.

The Paladins will hit the road to take on UNC-Asheville on Tuesday, before traveling to face Wofford to wrap up their regular season on Saturday.
