Brie Howard went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Sam Leski and Katie Raper belted back-to-back homers to lead Austin Peay to an 8-0 victory over Furman on the opening day of the Furman Softball Classic Friday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium. After the Governors (9-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Leski and Raper went back-to-back as part of a three-run second inning to build a 4-0 lead. Austin Peay added a single run in the four inning and three more in the top of the sixth to force the mercy rule.
Furman’s offense scored 18 runs over 11 innings and the Paladins tossed back-to-back shutouts, including a no-hitter by Emme Buzhardt, to claim a pair of victories on Saturday at the Furman Softball Classic at Pepsi Stadium. Furman 10, Holy Cross 0 (5 inn.) In Furman’s first game of the day, senior Lauralee Scott hurled a one-hit shutout to lead the Paladins to a 10-0 victory over Holy Cross in five innings. Scott, a native of Greenwood, S.C., fanned five batters over five innings without issuing a walk to improve to 2-1 in the circle. The Paladins exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third. A walk, error, and bunt single started the rally before Madison Petty drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Kiley Perry laced an RBI double into the gap. After another base on balls, Rachel Hawkins hammered her first career home run, a grand slam to left-center field. Furman added three more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Kate Stoltzfus’ two-run double. Perry went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and a walk to lead Furman’s seven-hit attack while Hawkins drove in four runs. Sophia Rincone (1-1) suffered the loss for Holy Cross after allowing 10 runs, just three earned, on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Northern Iowa plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning and Anna Wischnowski hurled a one-hit shutout as the Panthers downed Furman, 4-0, in the finale of the Furman Softball Classic on Sunday afternoon. O’Bryan took the loss for Furman after allowing three runs on four hits in six-plus innings. The Cleveland, Tenn., native issued three walks and fanned five batters. The Paladins (5-9) are back at home on Wednesday to host USC Upstate in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium. Admission is free.
