Furman Paladins football (0-1) comes back to the friendly confines of Paladin Stadium to face Charleston Southern Buccaneers (0-1) in a 6pm match up. It’s also a game dedicated to Bryce Stanfield who passed away in the spring due to a heart condition.

Furman starts off the game in the first series with an interception but is able to hold the Bucs on a fourth down and get the ball back. They start marching down the field, they attempt a field goal of 52 yards, and it hits the uprights, and Furman will turn it over to the Bucs on the 32-yard line.

Charleston Southern is the first to score with a fade pass to the end zone and its 6-0 Bucs over the Paladins with 5:20 in the first quarter. The Bucs missed the extra point as it was wide right, and we get ready for the Paladins to get the ball back in hopes to tie this thing up before the half.

Furman gets the ball back and is once again marching down the field but are held at the 44-yard line and have to punt away, Bucs take over at the 18-yard line. They are not able to get the field, and Furman gets the ball back and we are heading into the 2nd quarter 6-0 Bucs over the Paladins. Furman has a 4th down 42-yard line and will punt away.

Furman first quarters stats 4 first downs, 9/51 rushing yards, 39 yards passing 5-7-1 c/a/i, 16/90 offensive yards, held the ball 7:38 minutes. The Paladins was a dismal 0-4 on third downs in the first half, they will have to make that stat be better to get back in this game.

Furman drives all the way down to the 11-yard line and will have to settle for a field goal and its 6-3 Bucs ahead of the Paladins a 10-play drive with a 25-yard field goal as we have 7:13 left in the half. Furman gets the ball back from the Bucs and are once again taking the ball down the field its first down at the 39-yard line of Furman heading west to east. Touchdown Furman as #8 Trey Hedden leads the offense down for a touchdown as #1 Colton Hinton gets the shuttle pass and makes the end zone. The Paladins take the lead 10-6 and we head to the 2-minute warning, Charleston Southern is at the 46-yard line first down.

Charleston Southern is marching the ball down the field fast trying to get points before the half end. Charleston Southern with 28 seconds left hit a huge TD pass and the score is now 14 to 10 after they do a trick play instead of an extra point and Furman will either come out to get down the field fast or they will kneel and go into the halftime down four. Halftime and its 14-10 Furman down to Charleston Southern.

The Paladins come out of the half and get a huge stop on downs of the Bucs and get the ball back on the 21-yard line after the punt. The Paladins hit a huge pass from #8 Trey Hedden to #3 Ben Ferguson and takes the ball down to the 19-yard line. Trey hits another huge pass to #87 Holdbrook to the one-yard line. Then its touchdown Paladins as #7 Myion Hicks up the middle and the Paladins take the lead 17-14 with a 7-play drive. There is 11 minutes left in the third quarter as Freshman QB Trey Hedden has looked good in relief of Carson Jones so far in the game.

The Bucs get a huge play that takes the ball all the way up to the 44-yard line of Furman then have a huge fumble taking the ball back to the 45-yard line of Furman. Interception by the Bucs as Trey throwing to #2 was intercepted and Furman has their backs against the wall with The Bucs down on the 6-yard line. Charleston Southern scores and its now 21 to 17 the Bucs over the Paladins with 6:46 in the 3rd left.

Trey Hedden has brought the Paladins back with a huge throw the 50-yard line, but the run afterwards is short of the first down, and its fourth down and we are going for it and Furman gets the first when #7 gets the first down. Furman is taking the ball down the field and is looking sharp so far. After a huge personal foul call, Furman is down on the 24-yard line first down. Another huge third down made as #8 Trey Hedden has been looking for any open in the middle and has been on the money. Furman has a holding play that brings back the TD run so we are still 21-17 Bucs over the Paladins. Its 3rd and goal from the 19-yard line and Hedden takes the snap and it’s another flag on the play. Flag against the Bucs as it was a personal foul and its 1st and goal, and the clock is reset to 18 seconds. The Paladins fumble the ball, and the Bucs recover the ball and its first down Bucs at the 9-yard line. It is the end of the third quarter and Furman is down 21-17 to Charleston Southern.

Furman after 3 quarters 17 first downs, 30-99 rushing, 223 passing with 16-26-2 c-a-int, 56-322 total offense. 3-4 in the red zone, 4 for 12 on 3rd down. The Bucs are still deep and have to punt it away and Furman takes the ball at the 49-yard line of the Bucs. Trey Hedden runs the ball on 3rd and four and gets the first down, but then gets sacked at the 44-yard line so its second and long. Two huge penalties against the Bucs give the Paladins first down on the 24-yard line. Furman needs a score here with 11:21 in the game. Furman gets a first down at the twelve-yard line. Furman is not able to get a first down, and the field goal unit comes on the field.

Furman is able to hold Charleston Southern and will get the ball back with 7:40 left in the game. The Bucs are taking the ball right down the field on the Paladins with 4:14 left in the game they are on the 7-yard line first down. Furman gets a huge stop on 2nd down from the 6 and its 3rd and goal for the Bucs with 3 minutes left in the game. Furman gets another huge stop for a loss and its fourth down at the 6-yard line 2:22 left in the game. Both teams have 2 timeouts and Furman fans are standing hoping for a stop or missed field goal. Charleston Southern gets the field goal and its 24-20 Bucs over Paladins with 2:18 left and Furman needs a touchdown to win with a freshman QB Trey Hedden who has been great today for his first extended start after Carson Jones had a rough first quarter.

Furman gets the ball back and its now 4th down with 2:04 left and the final play of their game if missed. Furman needs this play to be a first down or more. Furman does not make the first down and Charleston Southern will win this game tonight over the Paladins.
